A Little Cat Psychology
We want our cats to leave some things alone. Ideal "cat persuasion" gives the cat a change of heart, does not harm the cat, and does not cause the cat to be afraid of us.
These hints can help your cat believe that the scowl of the Cat Behavior Gods, not you, takes the fun out of certain things. For instance, the cranky Cat Gods:
  • made the plant taste terrible (Bitter Apple)
  • rained on their parade if they scratch furniture (spray bottle with water)
  • made a ruckus if they try to go outside (tin can with pebbles)
  • made the sofa smell terrible (Cat Away spray or vinegar) and the scratching post smell great (rub catnip on it)
...and you just confirm these signs from the Cat Gods with a firm "NO!"

The flip side is that cats, like dogs (and people!) do enjoy enthusiastic praise when they do the right thing — either on their own, or with encouragement from the Cat Gods.

Praise costs nothing, pleases your pet, makes you smile, and reinforces good behavior.
