Dalmatians: Much More Than Just Spots
[The following is from the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)]
But they’re not for everybody. Before you acquire a Dalmatian, seek
professional advice from your local humane society or breeder about these dogs,
and know that Dalmatians require an extraordinary amount of companionship,
training, and exercise.
The ideal caregiver for a Dalmatian will be prepared to house this short-haired
dog inside during colder weather and provide frequent and long walks to satisfy
the dog’s physical needs. Because Dalmatians are often strong-willed, they
require an unusual amount of patience during training. These energetic dogs may
not be appropriate for younger children, cannot be locked inside for long
periods of time, and need lots of attention.
Dalmatians can also be prone to deafness, kidney stones, and skin disorders.
These dogs are perfect for people who don’t mind constant shedding and digging,
and are looking for an active, challenging dog.
When you are considering adding any new pet to your family, visit your local
animal shelter, breed rescue organization, or reputable breeder. Otherwise,
you run the risk of patronizing a puppy mill and getting a dog with behavioral
or physical problems. Thank you for making the responsible and humane choice.
